SUNSET BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- Sunset Beach Police say Patricia Marie Rene, of Carolina Shores, died in the ocean Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Joseph Smith says a distress call came in around 11:30 a.m. for a woman who was unresponsive in the water near the 1st Street access near the fishing pier.

The 63-year-old woman was pulled to shore by unidentified beach goers. Life saving measures were attempted until EMS arrived. Deputy Chief Smith says she was pronounced dead at Brunswick Medical Center.

Smith says there were no rip currents involved and he does not suspect foul play. He says, at this point, the medical examiner has not determined if the cause of death was a drowning or another medical emergency.

Even using common sense does not help in rip currents. On July 23, 2014 by husband was taken down by rip currents. He was not in deep water(a couple of inches above his knees) and not goofing around. He is one of the lucky ones. He survived. He had no heart beat or pulse and was blue when pulled from the water. Quick action from the emt's saved him. He went to one hospital, then flown by a helicopter to a larger hospital. The first three days he remembers nothing. He is considered a drowning victim with a complete recovery. We were at Ocean Isles Beach. There were no flags to warn us. We would never have gone in the water if we knew of any warnings. Now I'm looking at different sites and it says how dangerous the waters are in that area. So why hasn't the city done something to warn people? Beautiful area but would not recommend going there because no safety precautions are taken by the city at the beaches.
