WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was the last day of school in New Hanover County, and kids are ready to get out of the classroom and into summer vacation. But one Wilmington man is making sure they don’t forget everything they’ve learned when they head home.
69-year-old Bert Novak is no stranger to education.
“The more you learn the more you earn,” he said. “And I’ve been to seven universities in my life.”
But now he’s taking a break from his education to teach kids in his neighborhood why it’s so important to keep learning, even during the summer.
“If you don’t continue to learn, you’re out of that groove,” Novak said. “It takes you a couple of weeks to get back into it. When school starts, then you’re two weeks behind and you’re playing catch up.”
That’s why Novak spent nearly $500 on toys and educational games to help kids in his neighborhood kick off the summer the right way.
Kids were more than excited to see how much hard work Novak put into making this such a special day.
“I’m glad to be here,” James Jinwright said.
“It means a lot to me because this man did all of this just for us kids,” Ty’mon Brown said.
“This is exciting. He made a huge party all for us,” Joaquin Tort said. “I like it.”
And Novak’s grandson says it’s definitely worth hours they spent setting up in this heat to see the smiles on the children’s’ faces.
“They got here, and it was all worth it. All this work, I never expected to be so happy to see them finally get what we set up this whole day and it’s worth it,” Bryce Reed said.
Novak says this event will continue next year. He says he loves kids and wants to make sure they have the best, most educational summer ever.
