WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The WWAY Surprise Squad was at it again Friday afternoon. This time, we headed over to the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority to put some smiles on the faces of people paying bills.

Paying those bills are a part of life and, let’s face it, it’s not very fun to do.

But with the help of Alan Perry and Perry’s Emporium, we put on the WWAY Surprise Squad gear and made paying bills a little more fun.

I think this is SUPER nice…and really awesome….but the only drawback is those that are struggling to get that water bill paid and were at work….didn’t get a chance..the giveaway patrol appears only to do these awesome giveaways during a 9-5 time period..having water in New Hanover County has become a TREASURE….unlike other county resources….help with the electric bill once a year if you receive food stamps….there is NO help from the county or state with the water…Ive bought extra gallons of water with my food stamps…because come Monday my water will be cut off …$128.00 is not something that I have…I DO work…but get NO child support because the County cant seem to enforce the COURT ORDER for it! With two children keeping a roof over our heads….paying the electric bill, rent, I ride the city bus to and from work…we don’t have cable..and we use the public library for internet because it is free. Maybe the next giveaway WWAY could find a way to help those that cant get there to stand in a line…..just a thought.

I’m sorry for your pain. Looks like you’re going through a hard time, like so many other people, but that per se isn’t WWAY’s problem.

Looks like your real question is: Why not me instead of someone else. The answer, although possibly unsatisfying, is pretty simple: Just because. Like winning a lottery, getting a random payout from WWAY is merely a matter of luck.

Regardless of how frustrating it feels to you, someone else’s good fortune has no connection to you personally. Just feel good about that other person’s good luck. It won’t cost you even a penny to do that.

Did it ever cross your mind that these people were paying their bills on their lunch break or that these lucky people who are getting surprised work the afternoons or third shifts at night. Just because they are receiving a surprise between the hours of 9 and 5 doesn’t mean they do not work or are taking advantage of the government. Thank you WWAY; keep up the good work.

No good deed goes unpunished. That’s why I have stopped make charitable contributions. Any time you do, someone always finds fault with it. I thought President Obama was taking care of all this.

    You related to these guys?

I had the pleasure of working with WWAY on this Surprise Squad segment. One thing that needs to be remembered; they still have to cover the news of the day while putting together these segments and that can affect the time when they are able to surprise people. I enjoyed watching them make our customers’ days that afternoon and CFPUA will gladly help them again if asked.

But when WWAY has lines of people waiting outside their studio wanting to be “Next!!”…then is when this good samaritan gesture will end. Then they won’t have to go far for a story :-)

When Obama has 75% of the country convinced they’re going to receive “free stuff” for nothing, how else would you expect the peeps to react to an offering of goodwill? They all think they’re entitled to it, remember?
