PINEHURST, NC (WWAY/AP) — A Wilmington man is facing felony charges after the NC Highway Patrol says he hit a trooper with a golf cart at the US Open tournament in Pinehurst Saturday and tried to get away.

Troopers say Thomas Lineberry, 59, who was a golf cart driver at the tournament, is charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and hit and run, both felonies. He is also charged with driving while impaired and resisting arrest.

The state Department of Public Safety said Sunday that Trooper Ryan Goodin was treated for a minor leg injury. He was one of about 170 troopers helping with security at the four-day event scheduled to end Sunday.

State officials say Lineberry posted a $3,000 bond Saturday night.

No problem. Sarcasm doesn’t always translate well in the written word like it does in the spoken word.

I am using sarcasm to call out an ill-informed lib poster.

If that was your intent you failed miserably.

Why is this a felony? According to guestgirdle there was no assault weapon used.

An assault weapon is not necessary for a felony assault charge.

Thats pretty bad first he is on the job drunk. Then he runs over or hits a police officer and resist arrest. How did he get the job. Just wanted to get drunk and hang out with all the golfers.
