WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Police say a fire found burning at a Wilmington home by an officer patrolling the area over the weekend was intentionally set.
Wilmington Police say around 2 a.m., an officer in the area of 2813 Morgan Street heard a smoke detector going off before smelling smoke nearby. That's when police say the officer spotted smoke coming out of a home there.
When the officer finally found the fire coming from the back of the house, the tenant had just arrived home. Police say she went inside to get her dog out, and fire investigators got to the scene soon after.
Police say the fire sparked near the back door of the home, and firefighters later said it appeared that someone intentionally set the flames. WPD says the Wilmington Fire Department took over the investigation.
