LELAND, NC (WWAY) -- The author of The Color Purple is coming to Wilmington.

The co-chair of the Civil and Human Rights Award Luncheon, Stanley Moses, says the Pulitzer Prize winners visit stems from a controversy in our area over one of her books.

"She had heard about a person in Brunswick County that wanted to ban her book The Color Purple," Moses said. "She had followed that and was very interested in that."

The luncheon will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the day President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Countywide Community Development Corporation tried to find speakers that have national notoriety.

"Getting people on board seems to be a little toll, a little challenge, I guess you'd say," Moses said.

Event organizers even tried to reach out to speakers like Oprah Winfrey, Jimmy Carter and Colin Powell. Because there is also an event commemorating that day in Washington, DC, they were unavailable. Organizers say Walker and a friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Dr. Cordy Tindell Vivian, are more than happy to speak at this event. Moses says he really just hopes they are able to bring the community together to remember.

"It is a collaboration among the various counties and the various people to pull together a project to help the younger people," he said. "It is to understand where we came from, what we have achieved and what we're looking forward to doing.”

Afterward the luncheon Walker will meet with teachers to show them her own teaching techniques. The event is at noon on July 2 at the Wilmington Convention Center.

If she has time...

If she has time, maybe she can swing by the offices of Brunswick County Schools and show Mrs. Sykes, Mrs. Quagglia and Mrs. Cooke how a class individual comports herself.

Too bad troll-vog is capable of only one thought and incapable of finding his own user name. Reminds me of a one-armed garage band drummer beating on an empty can.

Her username should be....

Having trash like that book

Having trash like that book is part of what is wrong with our education system. Get rid of books like that and put in real literature.

Trash?

Have you read the book or have you taken one passage out of context and called it trash? We need more people encouraged to read as evidenced by posts with the word waist for 'waste."

The only "book" we need

THE BIBLE is all we need in schools! Close down librerrys! WAIST OF MONEY!

Oh yea

Those darn "librerrys" sure do "waist" money. Maybe if you were to open a book once in a while your posting wouldn't be so ignorant.
