KELFORD, NC (AP) — Bertie County officials say thousands of chickens were killed in a fire at a farm in Kelford.

Emergency Services Manager Mitch Cooper says the fire shortly before noon Monday destroyed one chicken house.

Tom Moore says there are about 28,000 chickens in each of the four chicken houses at the site.

Kelford Fire Chief Leslie Parks says the wind spread the fire quickly. He says the chicken house had burned to the ground by the time fire crews arrived.

Workers said they don’t know what caused the fire.
