WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A police standoff that started at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday ended peacefully without incident around 11 p.m.

The Wilmington Police Department said in a news release that the male subject, who is an off-duty police officer, was taken into custody and transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for evaluation.

When officers responded to the call at the Reserve at Mayfaire, family members told police the subject barricaded himself in his apartment and threatened to commit suicide.

For more than 11 hours, police negotiators, SWAT officers, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and EMS were on the scene working to resolve the matter peacefully.

Police said there was no immediate threat to the public, and they allowed tenants to come and go from the complex during the stand-off. Police did have to block off some streets in the area.

Police are not releasing the person's name at this time.

You People ARE INSANE

So one officer has a emotional breakdown, for reasons we don't know... Next it is a crap slinging contest with you people about all the Officers on the Force and demanding the head of the Chief of Police? You guys love to find wrong and that is your objective. Soldiers and Marines come home from dealing with situations and have these sort of melt downs so why is it so hard to think that the stress of those Officers would not possibly make one of them to snap. Also you say "It took a swat team to take him down".... No it took negotiations to take him down, Swat is always on scene "just in case" in a situation like this. People like you make me sick and I truly despise you all for being ignorant fools.

Poor Guy

I feel sorry for the man. All of the comments on here saying suicide has to do with corruption, are sick. Depression has no relation to corruption and you are a fool if you think otherwise. I can understand that if someone who protects to serve this city and spends ninety percent of their time locked in a car with a target on their chest, especially running a night shift and never getting to see the sun, has any and all right to have some depression and possibly mental issues. I challenge anyone who says otherwise, to strap a target to their chest and pick up this mans badge and try and take his place, as well as do his job of protecting any and all citizens in need within the Wilmington City. Go on, try it. You people make me sick. Have some sympathy and mabye cops like this won't have to deal with your horror stories so much. I will pray for this man and his family that he can heal and get better.

lets do it

Let's stop complaining on this blog, it only amounts to venting hostilities. Let us organize, lets show them we won't stand for this any more. This is the tip of the ice burg of whats going on in this town.....corruption...it goes all the way up to the court system and media.....when we do nothing....we are helping to protect these idiots with guns....a cop like this would not have hesitated to turn on citizens under the veil of pretending to protect us.... Wilmington citizens deserve better!!!

My biggest concern about

My biggest concern about this whole thing is this guy will get a few days off, with pay of course, and since no name is being released he/she could be back on the streets in a few days. I do believe if this had been anyone else other than a police officer, WPD would pretend that a gun was pointed at them and, well you know the rest of the story!!

So you think LEO's "pretend"?

Sounds to me that you likely have a criminal record and multiple run-ins with law enforcement. Only criminals tend to be cry babies like you.

You may wanna lay off the crack pipe and dry out for a few days before posting again...

Unreal

This community should be outraged at the ongoing lack of leadership shown by Ralph Evangelous. This recent incident with the officer for whom they are keeping secret is just another example of how the department picks and chooses what or who they want to throw under the bus. The department has many great officers that will never receive credit for their works because they don't compromise between right and wrong. I know personally many officers that have committed crimes and still work for the department because they are a part of the "Good old boy", policing that is upheld by Evangelous. He has on many occasions swept under the rug offenses such as domestic violence, DUI/DWI, misuse of power, affairs that the department are aware of, officers threats of suicide and allowed back on the job under close watch of physicians, and a host of other wrong doings that the department is aware of. How can the community be protected when the people who are in place to protect them are in some cases criminals as well. If we the people don't take a stand and get more vocal about who we are allowing to make the decision on right/wrong in most cases now who lives or who dies than we are no better than Ralph Evangelous who lacks the moral capacity to be a true leader. If we want to see our city do better, it's time to take the city back from Evangelous and Saffo.

What exactly...

What exactly do you want to see done publicly to this officer? How does what happened with this officer match up with all of the other issues you bought up (many of which I agree with)? Dragging this officer through the mud at a time like this will serve nothing more than to feed peoples morbid curiosity...nothing else.

bull

If you really know all these laws that have been broken turn them in.I say bull s#!%

The buck stops with the city

The buck stops with the city manager. The Chief can't hire or fire anyone, only the city manager can. Cheat'em needs to be the first to go.

Please educate yourself

Please educate yourself before posting. WPD has to follow Federal regulations under HIPA in which protects an employees medical records. The same applies to you and your employer. Everyone has a breaking point. Its a shame that WPD has concentrated on hiring fresh college kids who are generally softer since the public can't stomach pro-active police officers. And this is what you're going to see a lot more of

All you people with negative

All you people with negative thoughts on WPD. Stop your b------g and join the force and see what its like. I wouldn't be in law enforcement for all the money in the world. What with the crazies, the newspaper reporters and tv stations on their case, they don't stand a chance. Do wrong and sue the city, or somebody.

Officers are not the only

Officers are not the only ones with shitty jobs. They are in a position of power and should be held to higher standards than public citizens. When you sign on as a Officer of the law you know exactly what you are getting into....If you can't handle it then don't do it. And DO WRONG??? I Forgot Officers only do right around here....

Sick!!!!

We don't treat someone with diabetes this way, but if it is a mental health issue it is automatically a "moral issue." Please get over yourselves and read a little.

inequality

It absolutely strikes me that the WPD withholds the cop's name but the average citizen is plastered all over the 2 tv stations and the Star News in the same situation. Not right for someone who is employed by the citizens and is paid to serve us. The other amazing fact is their 10 hour patience with him when you KNOW anyone else would have had mustard gas blown into the apt and a gun fight would've broke out.

Who is footing the bill for all the overtime of 75+cops??

I tend to agree.....

I tend to agree.....

I wish you would complain

I wish you would complain about the bill we're footing for these dope dealing, gang bangers, we arrest a half dozen times a year. Not to mention what we pay for their jail, and legal fees.

Nobody was hurt, and we all have problems. Even police officers.

Fair Reporting

Brian Berger could have a hangnail and it would be a 6 week news cycle. This officer created a day long ordeal for an entire neighborhood and the public isn't even entitled to know his name. I am not passing judgement on his issue(s) and I hope he gets the help he needs.......BUT the public does have the right to know who this person is.

With that line of reasoning...

So, you were inconvenienced and now feel that you are due the right to know the officer's name? With that line of reasoning, we should get to know the name of everyone who requires a ride in an ambulance. It costs us money and slows us down in traffic, it ties up EMS, Fire, and LEO's.

There is something known as patient confidentiality. This cop was suicidal and not some bank robber or drug dealer. He is due the same right for confidentiality that you and I are.

HELP

This dangerous guy had a gun and it took a swat to take him down, and what did they do....took him down to the hospital for an evaluation! Oh my!! Well well...I guess they take care of their own. When my loved on got in trouble... no gun involved....had a legal mental disability, although the police were made fully aware of this, my loved one was taken straight to jail, was given no medication and no mercy. I guess not all of get the same treatment, I guess if you are a police men, you get royal treatment. My loved one actually had a mental disability well...well.....well....please someone save this town from the incompetent Wilmington Police Department. They are a bunch of criminals themselves. HELP!!!!! Get the word out!!!

why didn't they just shoot

why didn't they just shoot the guy, they sure don't hesitate to shoot anybody else. and they have experience shooting through glass too so that should not have been an issue.

My guess is that the fella

My guess is that the fella didn't point a gun at them or refuse to obey commands.

and the teenager, Preston

and the teenager, Preston Pate" did??????????????????????????????
Get real.

Id bet its the officer that

Id bet its the officer that just got indicted. A friend of mine sent me a picture of the guy as he was being brought out of the apartments. And it looks just like him.

Some Friend

"I'd bet its the officer that just got indicted. A friend of mine sent me a picture of the guy as he was being brought out of the apartments. And it looks just like him."

Such a nice caring neighbor.

WPD is a JOKE, Wilmington

WPD is a JOKE, Wilmington officials are clowns, Our government here in SE North Carolina is run by the worst people we could have. We are probably the laughing stock of North Carolina. Everyone knows it and why is nothing being done. Why would i vote when there isn't anyone ever worth voting for around here??? Citizen are not as stupid as your think and we can see between the lies and corruption that has been plaguing Wilmington and New Hanover County for a long long time. Eventually we will get tired of it and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Is WPD A Joke to YOU?

IT IS NOT A JOKE TO ME.

You should take a moment and re-read what you wrote. The tone is absolutely hostile.

My question to you is, "what are you so angry about?"

If YOU HATE WILMINGTON soooooooooo Much.... LEAVE!!!

Guest 2016

You know the WPD are a completely Joke. Questions for you, were you born here in Wilmington? If not, then you really didn't see how wilmington changed from time to time. Especially with the WPD. There is lies, corruption, and funky ass dirty cops here if you don't think so. You know good and well if that person was a citizens of Wilmington, they would have taken more of actions to desolve the problem from being 10 to 11 hours. Don't even act like the people of wilmington are treating the same as Law Enforcement. The whole WPD might need an change and it has to start within the Department, but who is Brave enough to do so? Just like everyone was saying they gone treat him at the mental health department and sooner or later will be back out patroling with a gun on his hip like he ok to serve and protect the community. And its not the fact if he was pointing his gun at the public or even causing harm, the people of Wilmington need to know who this psycho is just for their safety. Not to discrimnate or shun but to keep clear of him just in case he decide to trip again. Also if it is the person who is being investigated for the excessive force issue thats been going on, then yeah that tells you he know he did some sh*t wrong and won't own up to it cause this coward so call officer trying to take the easy way out instead of facing his punishment like any other citizens in Wilmington would have.

I actually love wilmington

I actually love wilmington and was born here 30 years ago. What I dont like is what is has come to be. Wilmington is not what it used to be. I have been considering moving from my hometown because of how awful it has become....
