WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A new bus service linking Wilmington with Fayetteville and Charlotte is expected to start service tomorrow, according to the NC Department of Transportation.

The Queen City-Coastal Connector intercity bus, operated by Horizon Coach Lines, will add service to Wilmington, Whiteville and Lumberton to its existing route to Fayetteville, Laurinburg, Rockingham, Wadesboro, Monroe and Charlotte.

One trip will operate between Charlotte and Wilmington in each direction every day. The bus will leave Wilmington's Forden Station at 7:20 a.m. and arrive at Charlotte's Greyhound bus station on W. Trade Street at 1:20 p.m. The bus leaves Charlotte at 3:45 p.m. daily with a 9:50 p.m. arrival in Wilmington.

The trip from the Port City to the Queen City costs $57 with a discounted fare of $47 for kids, seniors, students and the disabled. The trip is cheaper between other stops on the route.

The NCDOT says intercity bus services are fixed-route, scheduled services that provide long-distance transportation between North Carolina cities, as well as connections to the national intercity bus system. Eight intercity bus routes serving communities throughout the state receive federal, state and local funds to provide transportation between rural and urban areas.

We had bus service for years, and an electric trolley to Lake Waccamaw. Imagine that!

I think its a great idea...for people who are financially stricken and do not have their own transportation..I think it will do great because so many people will rely on it to visit relevatives and so forth especially seniors and others as well.

This is a great option especially if you want to go to Charlotte and watch a team playing the Panthers during football season. I will be using for sure.

Indeed, this is a great new option for everyone! Some comments here reveal an extraordinarily car-centric and parochial way of thinking. In many countries, a highly diverse range of people -- the wealthy included -- make good use of public transport options. NC's residents and visitors would benefit hugely from greater public transport options!

Seriously - REALLY want to connect these cities? How about a bullet TRAIN which would travel between the three cities - now, THAT would be worthwhile. A bus?? Really?? I can't imagine there would be enough riders on a regular basis to make it at all profitable.

Dear Linda A Mountjoy - after you complete your feasibility study regarding the implementation of a bullet train for the cape fear region, please share your results with local city councils, county commissions and NC DOT. I'm sure the usage vs. cost would be a far better option than a bus.

I mean how broke do you have to be to even consider this? If you have to travel anywhere by bus you can't afford to take a trip. Just the idea is cringeworthy.

"Cringeworthy" would be the tell that you are probably a wanna be rich dude. You waited awhile to use the word after you found it didn't you?
Walk out of your room and tell your mommy you're ready for her to make your lunch now.
I, myself, will be parking my 2014 vehicle and taking the bus to Charlotte asap. Just for fun!
It'll have to wait until after my cruise to Alaska though.
Man, I had to save for a whole MONTH for that!
But that's what happens when you decide to purchase 10 acres and build a house. It takes a little longer to save for other things.
But, GASP!!!!!!! I own things. I have a job and PLENTY of money yet...I WANT TO TAKE A BUS???!!???
You're a little too pompous in your approach man. Appreciate the little things.

It must be so unpleasant just having to think about people who're financially challenged. They really shouldn't be allowed to travel anywhere and should all be under house arrest for having so little money. You poor thing, having to suffer so often by being exposed to those who have less worth than you.

What's really cringe worthy is your unrealistic elitism.

Really DUDE your elitist attitude is showing. Are you so out of touch you don't realize there are plenty of under-employed people who use public transportation every day. They cannot afford a car (payment, insurance, routine maintenance, gas). They may need to or want to go to Charlotte, and this is a means to do so.

Out of touch? I believe what the person who posted previous to yours was trying to convey is that this give, give, give isn't working. It just creates more entitlement mentality. We already provide the "have not's" with most everything except for a free vacation....so why not. I myself cannot afford more taxes to provide for more free transportation. Fabian Socialism will be the main cause for our demise when it's looked back upon.

In no way can a privately held company expanding it operations be considered Fabian Socialism.
