New Hanover Regional simulates mass emergency

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover Regional Medical Center prepared for a mass emergency Monday morning.

Staff and law enforcement simulated a shooting at UNCW that left more than a dozen victims.

The victims were taken to the emergency room where staff moved them through the operating room.

A hospital spokeswoman says these drills help with communication between EMS, ER staff, and county and city officials.

"Being proactive is huge. It is a huge part of every healthcare system; testing processes, taking a proactive approach and just being prepared," said Martha Harlan, Director of Marketing and Public Relations. "I mean you want to count on us if it's your family member or you."

After the drill staff evaluated how and what they could do next time. They say they will re-evaluate the process again in a couple of days.

Harlan said these drills are completed periodically and help staff to test process.
