July 4th celebration runs smoothly in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)-- Wilmington Police say 4th of July celebrations went smoothly in Downtown.

In a media release, they say more than 20,000 people showed up to watch fireworks in downtown.

The biggest problem was traffic, with some motorists waiting in traffic for an hour or more to get out of the immediate downtown area.

Police also said they didn’t issue many security citations.

"We're proud of the hard work and the intense planning that goes into events of this magnitude" said Ralph Evangelous, Chief of Police in a media release, “We are also extremely grateful for the partnering agencies who helped make security effective.”

I commend local law enforcement for a great job before, during and after this year's Independence Day fireworks. I was pleased to see Chief Evangelous on the scene into the morning hours working alongside others to ensure everyone's celebration downtown was safe.
