RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina budget talks remain slow as House Republicans held a meeting with empty seats and Gov. Pat McCrory tried to keep pressure upon senators to ease back on their teacher pay proposal.

The House budget negotiators met publicly Monday in a committee room to talk about the differences in their positions with the Senate. But their Senate counterparts chose not to attend.

The hour-long presentation reiterated how the two sides disagree on teacher pay, teacher assistants and Medicaid eligibility.

McCrory threatened last week to veto any plan that contains the Senate’s proposal to raise teacher pay by more than 11 percent because it results in deep cuts elsewhere. The governor told a Charlotte radio station he’s also got to think about how to raise salaries for other state workers.
