PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A former Laney High School cheerleader is at the center of the Twitter-verse, as family members work to honor her memory.

Jasmin Grady died early Sunday morning in a car accident on Highway 17. Now, her twin brother is working to fulfill her last wish, which has Twitter trending in a big way.

Kenneth Grady, 20, said he and his twin sister Jasmin used to talk about what their last wish would be. He said it all started with a conversation with his sister.

“Just random little conversations,” Kenneth said. “She said if she was to ever pass, she wanted a big funeral, and she wanted Drake to sing at her funeral.”

So that’s what Kenneth set out to make happen. The night after she passed away in a car accident, he took to Twitter, and Twitter took off.

In a matter of hours, Kenneth’s hashtag topped the U.S. trending chart on Twitter, with tweets pouring in from all over. It even gained recognition from a few celebrities, like Keke Palmer and Montel Williams.

Former cheerleading teammate Natia Simmons said she kept up with Jasmin through social media after high school. “Her tweets, her posts on Instagram, her vines, everything,” she said. “We’re really going to miss seeing her.”

Getting Drake to come to the Port City might seem like a tall order, but Kenneth said even if he doesn’t come, that would be OK.

“I’m just glad for all the support she’s receiving, and my family is receiving,” Kenneth said.

Jasmin was going to be a junior at North Carolina A&T this fall.

If you knew Jasmin you would understand she was his biggest fan. Regardless of what you think this is a beautiful movement she’s bringing us together. Apparently your just to ignorant to see the bigger picture. We just want to honor our friend with what she deserves. #drakesingforjasmin also people talk about the younger generation doesn’t work together like the older generation well look at us now!

I agree with Buzz. This trend of trying to get “celebs” attention is ridiculous. So that was her dream to have Drake perform (who knows why). But the sad fact is she is dead – so what good would it do for him to sing – she can’t hear it.

  • Buzz

When did funerals become showbiz events? And if Drake consented to sing at the funeral, what song would he sing? Would he sing a hymn? I don’t think so.
I have long observed the creeping in of showbiz into all areas of our culture, but I never thought the trend would intrude into funerals.

For people that don’t understand, this is 2014. Times have changed. This is what we call a “Celebration of Life” or a “Homegoing Service.” Why not celebrate her life with her last wishes.

  • keisha cole

i dont believe it is about the showbiz part of it and more so about trying to do an honorable thing and fulfill a dying wish/dream for a dearly departed. the twin is trying to make the best of a tragic situation. Drake knows church songs and hymns so he could sing what ever would be suited. It is a beautiful movement, accept it for what it is. Why try to read more into it and turn it into something invasive and intrusive.

  • Be Respectful

Its not about show business. Its about her dying wish. Drake actually has a lot of fitting songs. Plus hes an artist he can always write something. Shows hiw much you know. So unless you have enough knowledge you should really keep yourrude comments to yourself. Have respect for the family. Thank you.

Who cares. No offense but what if that was your child’s dying wish. The point is that she was to young to leave this world and the world is doing something for a good cause why are you being do mean and hateful

  • TJ

    Shut up

  • Jennifer

Please tell me what it matters to you, or anyone else what her wishes were if she were to ever pass? You have a grieving brother who is trying to honor his sisters wishes and you comment with something smart about showbiz….. Wow, just wow! :(

  • Rhonda

No one asked YOU to sing. This is NOT YOUR FUNERAL. Drake singing at her funeral has absolutely nothing to do with YOU. Her brother is trying to honor her wish and that’s all that matters. Obviously you do not support the cause, and that is fine. However, this has nothing to do with you. #DRAKESINGFORJASMIN

Why would you be so negative a Drake appearing on this young lady homegoing service. This is something she dreamed about. If her love ones wanted to honor her last wish let it be.

  • allgood

This young man is just trying to fulfill his sister last wish. He is using the resources available to him, to make it happen. NOW WHATS WRONG WITH THAT? If more people would go that extra mile for each other the world would be a better place. BUT NO!!!!!! ITS EVERY MAN/WOMAN FOR HIM/HERSELF. GOD HELP US!

You think that a celebrity works on goodwill?

Hate to break it to you, unless you’ve got money, he’s not showing up.

Plus, Its taking the focus off the deceased, and giving it to a celebrity.

Imagine how many funeral guests would attend if they knew Drake would be there…

And how would it work? Jasmin was great, she will live on in the hearts of her loved ones, but enough of that, Here is drake with “I’m Goin’ in!!!”.

Yeah, That does justice to her memory…

Hate to break it to you,but 1st you must know what you are truly talking about! Just a little over 3 months ago,Aubrey “Drake” flew personally to Houston to visit a young girl named Kennedy who is battling cancer. Her life expectancy is very short & like Jasmin Grady, Kennedy’s close friends from
high school & family rallied togther & took part in “#drakeforken” (search that on instagram) that got his attention! NOTHING in life is unreachable & with faith & prayer you can’t determine what will happen by a hypothesis or what other “celebs” do! I know Aubrey personally (no groupie at all before you pass judgment) & he’s very different from your normal stuck-up,too good to pose for pics with fans celebrities out here! He’s very humbled & if he did it for Kennedy he may just do it for Jasmin! The buzz is what got his attention for Kennedy! So,before you comment please know EXACTLY what & who you’re talking about! Don’t label 1 celeb b/c most of them wouldn’t do what Aubrey has done for his fans that he dearly loves. Have faith! Anything is possible! I pray his schedule can be rearranged to attend Jasmin’s funeral. You’re other topics of discussion are just speculation! Like I always say,”In life if you cant count on anything the 1 thing you can count on is people stating their opinions about you & your business whether you’re deceased or alive!” You don’t know what will be just like I don’t. Don’t overthink all those details,b/c either way I doubt if you’ll be reached for crowd control or pallbearer duty! So enough already let her family worry about that! That is their loved one.

Losing a sibling is not easy.Trust me I know. I lost my brother 2 years ago. Had I known what his last wishes were then I would have helped fulfill them. This is a family in mourning and to make the comments you have made toward them is rude. Yeah Drake may not come and I am sure the family knows that. For them this isn’t about having him there but rather a way to honor their loved ones last wishes. They have put it out there because it is their way of grieving and for someone to be so rude to them and make comments like you have is heartless. I pray that the family gets their wish!

Do you really think that no celebrities ever work on goodwill? How about the deaf Mariners player that reached out to that deaf girl and her deaf twin sister last season? How about Deangelo Williams giving up his airplane seat to the man he believed to be a Marine? How about Rachel McAdams giving up her first class seat for a soldier? How about Jon Cena who goes every time a kid asks to see him through the Make A Wish foundation? Christian Bale visited the Aurora shooting victims. He also took a 4-year old cancer patient and his family to Disneyland. Neil Patrick Harris volunteers at a soup kitchen on Thanksgiving. Ben Stiller served breakfast during Sandy. Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel also did volunteer work during that storm. Russell Brand gave a homeless man the shirt off of his back and a ride. Justin Beiber also honors requests made through the Make A Wish Foundation. He also flew a 6-year old cancer patient up to NYC to see him shortly before she died. Jim Cummings, the voice of Winnie the Pooh, takes the time to call kids in hospitals using his character’s voice.

Dan Akroyd and Bill Murray suited up as the Ghostbusters years after the movies were made to visit a terminally ill child.

In February 1998, [Old Dirty Bastard] witnessed a car accident from the window of his Brooklyn recording studio. He and a friend ran to the accident scene and organized about a dozen onlookers who assisted in lifting the 1996 Ford Mustang—rescuing a 4-year-old girl from the wreckage. She was taken to a hospital with first and second degree burns. Using a false name, he visited the girl in the hospital frequently until he was spotted by members of the media.

So, please, tell us again how celebrities only do good things for the money.

I don’t think it should matter what Drake sings if he comes to her funeral .the point is their trying to for fill her last wishes .if it was your child or loved one wouldn’t you I WOULD “R.I.P JASMIN GRADY ” MAY YOUR WISHES COME TRUE AND I PRAY YOUR FAMILY MAKE IT HAPPEN

  • Beth

What a beautiful girl! Too young to die! Only God knows why.

To her twin brother, I know you are hurting now, not understanding why Jasmine, why now. Look to God to be your comforter and he will be with you til the end. In the meantime, live for her and God because you never know how much time you have left.

To the other posters dissing a grieving brother. What’s wrong with you? Have some respect! If this was her wish, he should honor it. That’s what a good brother does. So sorry for her family and friend’s loss.

  • Martha Hardy

Could you imagine losing a love one instantly. Jasmine twin brother, wants to grant his sister, his wish. May GOD grant his sister her wish. Even if Drake can’t make it. I am sure he will do something special. Let’s just pray for the family, for them to be strong for these upcoming days and forever in there lives. It’s so heart breaking. My heart goes out to the Grady family. I know this is a hard pill to swallow. Drake will be there, that’s what we have to believe if he’s’ not, he will always be Jasmine fame. R.I.P. ANGEL JASMINE.
