WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Tigers semi-pro football team defeated the Carolina Stallions in their season opener over the weekend in Rocky Mount 18-2. Former NFL defensive lineman Jay Ross is the first year head coach of the Tigers this season. Ross is a graduate of New Hanover High and East Carolina University. We checked out practice on Tuesday in anticipation of Saturday’s home opener for the Tigers. “It’s new for me. It’s a learning experience. I’m a student of the game.” Ross said. “Really the whole thing about coaching is being a leader of men. I’m trying to take these guys to a different level, a level they’ve never been to before. We need more to show up(at practice) for us to have a great, winning season.”

The Tigers will hold their home against the Tri-County Crusaders on Saturday, July 19th. Kickoff is set for 7pm at Legion Stadium.
