RALEIGH, NC (AP) — House Democrats say Republican counterparts are denying them a full-time employee to manage their legislative operations although similar workers have been funded for the minority party in the past.
Minority Leader Larry Hall of Durham said Tuesday there’s no funding now for the Democratic caucus chief of staff because Speaker Thom Tillis authorized just one month of position funding. Hall blames Tillis for refusing to free up money already budgeted.
Hall says the money is small compared to several hundred thousand dollars spent on more than a dozen Tillis workers.
Hall says chief of staff money was initially refused because of his stand against new Legislative Building rules following anti-Republican demonstrations.
Tillis spokeswoman Anna Roberts didn’t address directly Hall’s accusations, saying Tillis’ office doesn’t usually respond to personnel matters.
