WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man has been sentenced to 17.5 years in prison in a child pornography case.

Michael Thomas Bassett Jr., 33, pleaded guilty in April to receipt of child pornography.

Federal prosecutors say in March 2013 law enforcement got a tip that an unknown person had posted child porn images on the social network Second Life. They got a subpoena for subscriber information and identified the account holder as Bassett, who was a registered sex offender living in Wilmington.

Forensic investigation of a laptop surrendered by Bassett’s estranged wife turned up 250 images of child pornography.

When officers arrested Bassett in September, they seized multiple storage drives and found 8,950 child porn images.

Bassett, who prosecutors say is from Ohio, was on the sex offender registry because of an out-of-state conviction.

Once a rapist/child predator, always a rapist/child predator. “Sex offender registry” and “supervised probation” is an exercise in futility. Incarcerate these sick folks for life, or get them off planet earth, and protect future victims.

…potatoes pinched off! That’s the only “cure” for perverts like this! Prison time isn’t going to do it.
