WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Hoggard High School head football coach and athletics director Scott Braswell will be taking a leave of absence in order to have surgery on a tumor in his lower back. Braswell is entering his 18th season as the head football coach of the Vikings.

We spoke with coach Braswell on Thursday about the removal of his tumor. He's in great spirits, but he's not sure when his surgery will be, nor does he know where it will be yet.

In his absence Craig Underwood will handle specials for Hoggard football. Dylan Dimock will engineer the offense. Jeff Turner will handle the Hoggard defense.

Hoggard High has been a perennial power in football in the Wilmington area under Scott Brawell. He's been the head coach of the Vikings for 17 seasons and ready to enter season 18 after the surgery.

Hoggard finished 11-2 last season.

I pray that all goes well with the surgery and recovery.

Coach Braswell is an awesome guy and I am sure if anyone can bounce back from a tough surgery it would be him. Wishing you the best of luck from Raleigh! Thanks for featuring this piece WWAY.
