WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH (WWAY) – The tournament kicked off early Saturday morning with a total of 70 boats participating in hopes one of them would claim the top prize.

Prize money was awarded to winners in two categories, flounder and red drum. The biggest flounder weighed 10.31 pounds and the largest drum weighed 7.45 pounds. The top leader walked away with 1000 dollars along with other sponsor prizes. The tournament also offered an extra bonus for participants who kept their fish alive

Max Gaspeny, editor of the Fisherman’s Post, said, “We have a live bonus pay out on our leader board. If you weigh in a flounder or red drum that makes the leader board, we’ll pay you and extra 20 bucks, so we try to encourage people to keep them alive. The flounders go to UNCW for future aquaculture research and we the drum go. We encourage that to conserve resources.”

This tournament was one of 5 other events on the inshore tournament trail. The next one will be august in Topsail, then to Carolina Beach in September.
