WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Today is the first day high school football teams are permitted to hit the practice field for the upcoming season. Most squads waited for the sun to come up, but that was not the case at Laney. The Buccaneers waited for the clock to strike midnight. Our report from Buctown includes standout Tariq Lane. The senior has decided to attend Laney after all after contemplating a move to Charlotte.
Midnight Madness is back at Laney under first year head coach Ashaad Yeoman. "We had done it in the past," Yeoman said. "It was a lot of excitement for the fans and that's one thing we want to bring back, that fun and excitement. We wanted to be the first team under the lights on a Friday night, and it's nothing like it."
We found Laney senior Tyriq Lane under the lights in Buctown.Five weeks ago Tyriq informed WWAY that he would be transferring to Victory Christian in Charlotte, but that's not gonna happen now. "A big situation came up," Lane said. "Home is where the heart is. I just kinda reneged on the situation. It was a great opportunity that I was giving up." Ashaad Yeoman added "Tyriq Lane coming back is a great asset, He's a great athlete and we wanna utiliize all the skills that he has."
Look for Lane to be all over the field for Laney. He'l likely play numerous positions because at Laney this year it's gonna be all about being fast, being better conditioned, and more competitive on Friday nights.
