WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Wilmington City Council approved using more money for the Municipal Golf Course Renovation.

Council members gave $162,000 more to buy more sod. Rain washed out many areas where crews had hand-planted grass stems.

Crews said it's no longer an option to re-plant, even though it would be cheaper, because they have to give their grass enough time to grow before the course re-opens in October.

The money is left over from the 2006 parks bond.

left over money?

If I understand this correctly there is money (left Over from a bond referendum) I.E. Taxes collected for a specific use just sitting around for close to 8 years while the city poor mouths about raises and gleefully tells the residents that the tax increases will only amount to a miniscule amount of an increase as if we are complaining for no reason. then they spend an extra 162K for a golf course that will never break even a golf course people! with all the funding issues this city has and they are spending left over money on a golf course how many of you play golf and is it so important to the vitality of the city that taxpayer need to support it. You want to see the future of golf course are like boats they are money pits ask any private club member. the city should sell these thing if they can even at a loss and use our money for something besides benefiting the elite that live adjacent to the course. All you 99%'s that support the crowd we have in there now should be going nuts over this it is actually some we can change.
Our hard earned cash being spent to maintain a few persons property values and do not make the argument that they pay taxes it no way covers the expense of a golf course

golf course funds

THE GOLF COURSE IS THE ONLY MONEY MAKING ACTIVITY THE CITY RUNS. MUCH OF OF THE PROFITS GO TO PAY FOR THE MANY ACTIVITIES THAT GO DEEP INTO DEBT EACH YEAR. IE TENNIS , BOXING, SKATE PARK ETC SO BE HAPPY THAT YOU ARE NOT TAXED MUCH MUCH MORE THAN YOU ARE NOW BECAUSE OF THE GOLF COURSE!!!!

Re: Left Over Money...

I couldn't agree more. I can think of other useful means to spend $162k of our tax dollars to benefit all of us. Teachers, Police, Fire, Medic, roads, etc.... but on a golf course?

the mun doggie aka goat ranch

The land for the Muni was gifted to the city by Hugh MacRae, and is not burdened by huge mortgage payments, unlike most private clubs. It is my understanding that the Muni makes a nice profit for the city. Since golf is the most, by far, popular sport played by adults, it seems logical to provide the service, and make some money.. After all, so many parks and ball fields and tennis courts etc, etc, all free--the Muni golfer pays 30 dollars or more to go out there and chase that ball.

"Since golf is the most, by far, popular sport played by adults, it seems logical to provide the service, and make some money.."

I see more commercials for Viagra and Cialis than I do golf. I'm betting this activity is running a close second...to golf. And come to think of it...both "sports" involve a "putter". :)
