WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police are investigating a Saturday shooting they say left one man dead with a gunshot wound to the back, and another recovering in the hospital.

Officers say Saturday around 2:45 a.m. an unknown man walked up to two men who were sitting outside of their home in the 1500 block of S. 12th Street. That’s where they say words were exchanged before gunshots were fired into a group of people.

Police found eight shell casings at the scene, and EMS transported the two victims to the hospital. Officers say one of them, Julian Jerrod Gibson, 24, was shot in the back, and later died at the hospital. The other, who police say is a female, was shot twice and is in stable condition at the hospital.

There’s no word yet on suspect information, but the Wilmington Police Department asks anyone with information to contact them at (910)343-3600.

What a surprise. I’m sure there was no dope involved. I’ll bet no gang involvement either. Just a couple of nice young men and lady hanging out at three am.

What could have happened?

Hey Barry, have you never been awake at 3am? Pretty pompous of you to blame the victim without any facts.

8 shell casings? The victims were “sitting” on their porch? And this took 8 shots??
Geez all you thugs out there – a little range work is needed – you’re wasting valuable ammo………

The game plan all along has been to price out the poor from downtown with the hope they would take their crime with them. To some degree this has worked well. Unfortunately the gangs thrive around public housing and have grown while the city has been slow to respond. The bottom line is we need to decentralize public housing from our city to get rid of the gangs.
Second issue is the easy access of weapons. Much of which is coming from “2nd ammendment” citizens who are careless with securing their weapons and have them stolen. We also have so-called “citizens” who are proxy buying and selling guns to these thugs.

Whatever happened to our nice quiet little town? I’ll tell you what has happened. You have a wannabe big city mayor that only cares about real estate and building hotels, and ballparks. You have a city council chomping at the bit to try and build and develop every square inch of the city because they are ALL in the real estate and development business! They tend to ignore the ugly parts if Wilmington and concentrate on their own personal pet projects. We need more police, more money for the police and a police chief who is not afraid to go after the people in office and let them know this! You are not going to stop gang violence by building hotels and ballparks. Think about it.

You’re exactly right. It’s one of the many reasons that we left Wilmington after living there 9 years. Thankfully we were in the unincorporated part of New Hanover and helped stopped forced annexation. The fact that the yahoos on the city council were reelected (with about 11% turn out) in 2013 speaks volumes. Besides the convention center they’ve been obsessed with a taxpayer funded baseball stadium, parks, walking trails and “scary” police cars.

I stopped going downtown my last year there. Very sad situation there and it won’t change until new people get on council.

The first part we can agree on; gangs are a major problem and public housing probably has it share of blame for that. The second part I cannot agree with; I’m not going to go through years of posts but do not most of them in cases like this later say “Possession of a firearm by a felon” when they are charged? I’ve had things stolen before from a locked residence with an alarm; I would hope that would count as “secure” in your book. If it is proven someone bought a pistol for someone else that committed a crime then they need to be responsible under the law as well. Leave the majority of responsible firearm owners out of this please.

Lets get this straight since you used “second amendment citizens” as a derogatory remark. So if “WE THE PEOPLE” believe in the rights guaranteed to us by “OUR” constitution we are responsible for some ignorant piece of trash shooting two people?
It is somehow the governments fault because they provide food shelter and education for those whom cannot or will not do it for themselves no matter where it is located , do you not think the city would love to move this housing elsewhere? It is a blight on the real estate market are you suggesting that we break up the housing and spread it around to other communities what would that do for property values, would you want to live next door to a government owned house and have people hanging out all day because they do not have jobs drinking forties and smoking a blunt? I don’t think so.
There is no way to pass the blame onto anyone but the hate filled drug fueled “model citizens” that commit this type of crime. What kind of a creature just drives up and shoots two people standing on a porch?
Furthermore, If they were worried about breaking the law this would not have happened since there are plenty of laws on the books pertaining to murder.
And now Rich get ready because here comes the medicine:
This type of crime is not because people in this country are allowed to own guns legally or that we try to help our fellow man, it is because folks like you keep making excuses for the animals that commit the crime instead of giving them what they deserve which is a speedy trial followed soon after by a public (as in on the town square) Execution.

As far as I am concerned, all apartment type public housing needs to be bulldozed down. Some sort of quarters, like barracks, should be set up far from town for those who dwell here, with strict curfews and rules or out you go. As for gun sales, thugs will get the guns, even if they have to break into homes.

We also have gun buy back programs all over the countey that buy guns from law abiding citizens and in turn the government turns around and sells them to cartels and militants and other countries. These guns eventually find themselves in the hands of criminals in america. If it wasnt for the 2nd amendment our country would be run by these gangs instead of the corrupt politicians we have now. Now sure which is better…

It’s obvious these ghetto thugs just hadn’t heard about WPD’s “Hug-a-Thug” programs like Midnight Basketball. For sure they would have given up their criminal life all to shoot some hoops!

shooting people is a lot more fun than shooting people. It really gets the adrenaline going.

What time does this news release say this happened Danimal? Do you even know the definition of pompous?

Quite frankly, I could care less what you think. And yes I have been awake at three am. Either getting ready for work or taking a pee. Your pick. As for my conclusion, just say it was an educated guess and a sarcastic one at that. You can go pound sand.

One: How has this gone on for three days and no one has blamed the police? Come on “community leaders” – throw out some blame!!

Two: Want to stop this? CLOSE YOUR LEGS GIRLS! Whats the single parent birth rate for kids these days? Over 70%? Whats the minority single parent family percentage? Over 80%?? Wow. Those are numbers for success. Yeah, I’m talking about black youth. Start having both parent influence and you’ll have less crime and less problems.

Come on “community leaders”, where are you on this? Speak up! Or, is your lack of voice actually a plan for increasing the numbers? Pathetic. All about blame, so thin on responsibility.

I guess sometime we have to say some-
Thing even if it doesn’t make sense. So sir
What’s the excuse for white youth when
They have both parents in the home(regardless )
Of the numbers you so happily posted)?
