Friday night lights; BB&T Jamboree to feature ten area teams Friday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- All ten head football coaches for the upcoming BB&T Jamboree attended a luncheon on Tuesday in order to promote this week's BB&T Jamboree. Click the play video icon in order to check out WWAY's coverage from the luncheon.

WILMINGTON, NC (BB&T RELEASE) -- The 28th annual BB&T Football Jamboree will be held Aug. 15 at Legion Stadium in Wilmington. The prep scrimmage is a fundraiser for 10 southeastern North Carolina high schools and student scholarships. BB&T would like to welcome North Brunswick high school who will be joining the Jamboree for the first time.

The jamboree begins at 5 p.m. with a cheerleading showcase featuring squads from New Hanover, E.A. Laney, John T. Hoggard, West Brunswick, Whiteville, Wallace-Rose Hill, South Columbus, South Brunswick, North Brunswick and Ashley high schools.

Scrimmages begin at 6 p.m. The match-ups in order are: Ashley vs. Wallace-Rose; Hill; Hoggard vs. South Brunswick; West Brunswick vs. North Brunswick; New Hanover vs. South Columbus and Laney vs. Whiteville. Each game consists of two 12-minute periods.

"This annual event highlights the excitement and anticipation for a run at conference titles and state playoffs for the 10 area high schools," said BB&T's Garrett Adams, jamboree co-chairman. "It is one of the most exciting high school events in southeastern North Carolina with a playoff atmosphere to help kick-off the season."

Proceeds from last year's event totaled $41,368, enough to fund 20 $1,000 scholarships (two per school). In addition, participating schools received about $2,000 each for their general operating budgets.

Since its inception in 1989, approximately $1,105,076 have been raised for southeastern North Carolina high schools, and included in that amount, 526 student scholarships totaling $512,000 have been awarded.

Advance tickets are $4 and available at all BB&T branches in Whiteville, Wilmington, Wallace, Rose Hill, Shallotte, Southport, Tabor City and Leland. Tickets are $6 at the gate. (Coolers, bags and umbrellas are not permitted in Legion Stadium or this event. Metal detectors are in use for admission into Legion Stadium.)

28th Annual BB&T Football Jamboree:

10 High School football teams from Southeastern North Carolina participate in this annual scrimmage game to kick off the school year. Money raised from the event funds scholarships for local students to attend college, and supports the general fund at each participating school. In the past 27 years, the event has raised $1,105,076 with over 520 local students receiving scholarships.

Participating schools include: New Hanover, Laney, Hoggard, Ashley, South Brunswick, West Brunswick, Whiteville, Wallace-Rose Hill, South Columbus, and North Brunswick (New for 2014).

Join us on Friday, August 15th, 2014 at Legion Stadium on Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington, NC. The Cheerleading Showcase starts at 5pm, and the Football games start at 5:45. Admission is $6 at the gate, or tickets may be purchased in advance for $4 at any local BB&T Bank after August 1st.
