WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Airlie Gardens officially opened its historic gate this morning after months of restoration.
Blacksmith Ben Kastner says there are not many of these traditionally-made gates left.
Crews took the gate down last October after they noticed it was falling apart. The gate dates back to the 1700s. Kastner says it would not have made it much longer.
"It was getting to the point where it was missing so many pieces that if they hadn't of fixed it now, you wouldn't have known what to make," he said.
Kastner says this is the first time he's worked on a historic piece like this, and it took almost a year. Airlie Gardens is glad to finally have the gate back up.
