WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A ShotSpotter alert turns out to be a pot spotter for Wilmington Police.

Officers responded to the alert just after 10 p.m. to 814 S. 8th St. They found six shell casings. They also found 26 marijuana plants in pots outside along the property line.

According to a WPD spokeswoman, David Smokes told officers when he arrived home he heard someone in his yard and fired his pistol into the ground in his back yard. He told police that he wanted whoever might have been out there to know he had a weapon to protect himself and his property.

Police charged Smokes with discharging a firearm within city limits and felony drug possession.
