WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — The Wahine Surf Classic was held on the south end of Wrightsville Beach this weekend.

The competition is for ladies of all ages surfing short and longboards. A stand-up paddle board division was also added to this year’s competition.

Jo Pickett, director of the Wahine Surf Classic, took over the event in 2013 and says it’s important to have this contest because in this male dominated sport, women needs to have more attention.

Pickett said, “We got a hundred girls here surfing and these girls came from our local area, a few from South Carolina. I would like to grow the event more regionally and up and down the East Coast.”

Pickett expressed the contest would not happen without the community sponsoring the event and continuously give support to the sport of surfing.

She hopes to continue running the event for years to come.
