Jury selection begins for former NW cop accused of soliciting a 17-year-old for prostitution

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) -- Jury selection is underway in Brunswick County for a former cop charged with soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Michael Hayes is accused of paying 17-year-old girl $60 for a sex act and filing a false report. But Hayes’s attorney says he is an innocent man.

Hayes sat silently in the courtroom as motions were heard, and jury selection began.

Investigators say Hayes met up with an underage prostitute he found on craigslist and offered her money in exchange for a sex act.

During the encounter, police say three men tried to rob Hayes and shot into his car.

Investigators say Hayes did not report the robbery to police.

Instead, police say Hayes claimed he was driving when he heard something hit his car that he thought might have been a bullet.

But investigators say the car damage came from a shootout with the robbers.

In court, Hayes’s attorney entered a not guilty plea on both charges.

"Mr. Hayes is anxious to have his day in court,” Hayes’s attorney Geoffrey Hosford said. “We're confident that the evidence will show he is not guilty of these charges.”

Hosford says the trial should only take a few days. We will keep you posted as the trial continues.

Police say the men who robbed Hayes started pimping when they got out of jail.

The 17-year-old girl has not been charged, because she is a minor who was forced into prostitution according to police.
