WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Laney Buccaneers recently participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Laney head football coach Ashaad Yeoman and Laney football director of media relations Cori Stukes challenged the football teams at Ashley, Hoggard and New Hanover to follow suit. The Buccaneers also challenged a handful of media people, including WWAY’s John Rendleman. Click the play video icon to see our report from Monday night.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a concept that is now viral. Here’s how it works. Dump a bucket of ice water over your head. Nominate others to do the same within a 24 hour period or donate money to ALS instead. Typically, the nominations come first. The purpose of the challenge is to raise money and awareness for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease(ALS). CHICAGO (CHICAGO SKY WNBA) — The first game of the Eastern Conference Semifinals will be held at 6:30 p.m. CT on Friday, August 22nd in Atlanta. The game will air on NBA TV. The Sky will return home to Chicago to host the second game of the series at Allstate Arena on Sunday August 24th, at 6:00 p.m. CT. Game two will air on ESPN2. The final game in the series, if needed, will be held in Atlanta on Tuesday, August 26 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

After battling adversity throughout much of the 2014 season, the Chicago Sky won five of their final eight games to finish with an overall record of 15-19. The Atlanta Dream finished the regular season with an Eastern Conference leading record of 19-15. The Atlanta Dream has reached the WNBA Finals three out of the last four years.

The Dream clinched the Eastern Conference on August 13 after defeating the Phoenix Mercury 96-82. Chicago and Atlanta played five times during the regular season, with Chicago winning the season-series 3-2, by virtue of winning the last two meetings on July 25 and August 10. This will be the first time Chicago and Atlanta meet in a WNBA playoff series. The number two seed Indiana Fever will face the number three seed Washington Mystics to round out the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

The first round of the WNBA playoffs is a two-out-of-three series (meaning the first team to two wins moves on to the next round). The top two seeds in each conference have the home court advantage for the series. The games alternate home sites starting at the home of the top seed.

The winning team in each first round series advances to the Conference Finals. This round is also a two-out-of-three series and again alternates home sites starting at the home of the top seed. The WNBA Finals Champion is determined in a best three-out-of-five series. The first two games are played at the home of the top seed, followed by two games (game 4 if needed) at the home of the lower seed. If the teams are tied at the end of four games, the fifth and final game is played at the home of the top seed.
