BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- As the start to school approaches, kids often find their emotions range from excitement to anticipation. So, how do teachers feel as they prepare for the big day before students head back to the classroom?

Lincoln Elementary teacher Shane Terzaken says even teachers get butterflies before the big day while they wait for their students to file in.

"A lot of kids have this idea of what school is whether it be good or bad," said Terzaken.

The third grade teacher hopes he can turn that idea into a positive reality for all of his kids.

"They are still young enough that you can change their perception," he said, adding that if that perception changes, it could also change the path a student takes in life.

"If they enjoy what they are doing now in school, they will continue," Terzaken said. "I automatically think of their potential. I think of what they are capable of doing and what they are going to turn into in the future."

True to form, as the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child.

"You can see it on their face, their expression changes. That's the light bulb. You see the light bulb above their head, and you're like 'yes, finally they got it,'" he said.
