BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Just a couple more weeks until a portion of the I-140 Wilmington Bypass is open.

That’s according to NCDOT Resident Engineer Wayne Currie.

He says the project that will connect US 74-76 to US 17 has taken longer than expected because of all the wet weather.

The next project is to take I-140 over the Cape Ffear River from US 421 to 74/76.

  • I don’t know what Mr Currie has been smoking but we don’t sell that around here!!! The leg of 140 from 74 to 17 has been finished since last October, signs and all…Why in haydees have they waited to Summer to hang 2 stoplights and concrete 3 medians? It could have been done almost a year ago and traffic flowing long before now! Someone really dropped the ball on this finishing up job…But yeah! blame it on the weather, that will make everything ok :( SMH at the waste of time and money! 10 months behind=sorry planning!!!

Yes…what you could see of it from 17 and 74 looked finished, but there were several bridges that had to be finished before the road could open.

To correct your story, if you take a look at the signs that have been put up near US 17 and US 74/76, it will be known as NC 140, not I-140, i assume the next leg will be known as Interstate 140.

That whole bypass idea was totally shot to heck when they decided to start at HWY 117 and stop at 421, and then started the second part from 74 to HWY 17 s. How nuts is that is in the first place? Does anyone else see the disconnect? 421, 17 and 74/76 still pile up at the bridges, so they decide to finally widen and add another lane on both sides of 74 between Leland and Cape Fear Bridge with all these cement barriers and uneven pavement and it has caused absolute havoc! There have been major accidents almost every afternoon rush hour for a week! You mark my words, if a major storm does head our way that calls for evacuation, we might as well blow away because we can’t even get to work and back! How would we evacuate NHC with the growth volume we have had in both counties with the slowest and most dysfunctional improvements to the infrastructure surrounding us??????

You are somewhat correct. When NCDOT finally gets around to opening this stretch of road, it will be NC-140. This new (and essentially useless) road will remain as such until the missing link is completed (if ever). Once the entire stretch, from 17 to 421 is completed, the whole thing – from hwy 17 north of Wilmington to Hwy 17 south of Leland will be I-140. Of course, we’ll all be dead and gone by then so you’ll just have to take my word for it :-)
