BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As hundreds of area students head back to school this week, law enforcement is warning drivers to watch out for kids and buses on the roads.

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is cautioning all drivers to be extra vigilant. To be safe, deputies say adding an extra 15 minutes to your morning and afternoon commutes for all the added traffic is a smart start.

In addition to warning drivers to watch out for children crossing the streets, deputies in Brunswick County also say they are working with the school system to help patrol the streets.

“They are in the process of installing some cameras on their buses to assist us in enforcement of passing stopped school buses, Lt. Mark Trull said. “So, you might now see law enforcement there at the time it happens but cameras will be available and we will be reviewing those cameras with the Brunswick County School System.”

A district spokeswoman says one bus has the camera equipment installed so far, and there are five more waiting to be put in place. She says they hope to have those on the buses by December.

Trolls are supposed to be stupid and funny. You’re halfway there!

Better yet instead of stopping (and clogging) the main roads could they not divert into a side street and load/unload the kids? Seems a much safer tactic from all stand points.

If stopping for a school bus causes that much confusion to a person, then that person probably shouldn’t be driving at all.

All drivers do need to be careful. However, the rules for when to stop for a stopped school bus can be confusing, and many are not sure about them. One example is that drivers, going in the opposite direction from the stopped bus, don’t have to stop when on a highway with 4 lanes plus a center turn lane. Those who know this rule and keep going are probably thought to be breaking the law, by some drivers. But, better to stop unnecessarily than not stop when you should. It would be nice if all local media had periodic PSAs throughout the year highlighting the bus rules (when drivers should stop or not stop), not just the beginning of the school year.

Pat Attention People – the big, big bus is bright yellow so that you can see it!!!!! There is never any reason or excuse to pass a stopped school bus and
penalties for doing so should be changed. Your cup of coffee, your trip to Walmart and the fact that you are late for work does not give you the excuse to pass that bus. The children’s lives are precious and you need to remember that you are just not that important!!!!!!!!!
