Profits melted by Mother Nature

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- This summer has been a bit of a mixed bag for business at area beaches.

What Michael Velez says, he says with a smile. He said running Carolina Beach Creamery has been a dream come true, of sorts. But, a bit of a letdown too.

“Thank god that we haven’t had any hurricanes but the weather has been pretty severe at the wrong times,” Velez said.

A rainy summer means traffic hasn't been what they'd hoped it would be, and because of that, they'll close for the summer next week.

Other business owners in Carolina Beach said this summer feels like it might end early. At the Seawitch Motel, they aren't slow.

“We are getting quite a bit of business. You can’t make up for weather it's gonna do, what it's gonna do," said Stefan Romaldini. But, he did say the rain hasn’t helped,

At the Creamery, Velez says it’s tough watching a business suffer like this.

“We love the ice cream business, because it’s very creative. We make all our own back here,” he said somberly.

But, homemade ice cream served with a smile is just not enough this year.

“But you gotta keep going,” he said. “The sun's coming up tomorrow again.”

He said he hopes, if they're lucky, next summer the sun will shine on them.
