High tides could wash out some holiday plans at Freeman Park

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) -- High tides could wash out some Labor Day plans at one area beach.

Mike Boxer and his wife Hanna have been enjoying freeman park for more than 30 years.

"There didn't hardly used to be anybody that came out here," Mike Boxer said.

Being able to drive and camp on the sand has made it a popular spot, especially on holiday weekends.

"There will be 5 cars deep people parking from here all the way to the end of the inlet," Boxer said.

That is a problem, because recent storms have caused eroded some of the beach along the north end of Pleasure Island.

"At high tide it erodes the beach really bad at one area about three quarters of the way to the north and it's impassable."

That is why Carolina Beach town manager Michael Cramer says they are closing off zones 10 through 14 and zone 18 to campers this weekend.

"That in itself is just a safety precaution," Cramer said. "We don't want people to be caught off guard when high tide starts coming in."

To help, Cramer says they will open up zones four and five to campers.
Boxer says that should help.

"If you stay on this side, on the south side of that narrow spot," Boxer said. "There is not a problem."

For the more than 5,000 visitors headed to Freeman Park this weekend, Boxer says just pay attention to the tides.

"Be safe," Boxer said. Have a good time here."

Cramer says the town will be handing out flyers at the entrance of Freeman Park with the tide schedules.

Actually it has nothing to

Actually it has nothing to do with tourists freeman park is littered with rednecks and illegals all summer mostly all local people, I mean who drives there 4x4 when they go on vacation people! Common sense here!

I bet you don't even know

I bet you don't even know what a true redneck really is. It has nothing to do with Jeff Foxworthy's comedy routines.

It blows my mind that people

It blows my mind that people would choose to live in an area that attracts tourists and then complain aboutvthe tourists who bring jobs and money into their community.

yep

sweet, stay home tourists, summer is over.

I agree - don't go to the

I agree - don't go to the beaches anywhere during tourist season - so much nicer after (and usually so is the weather). Freeman Park is a constant mess. As a boater who never goes there - I can see that it is a mess all the time - so sad
