SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) -- Vacationers are leavingTopsail Island one last time for the summer and for businesses who depend heavily on that summer traffic, it's a sad time.

"We got about 4 1/2 to 5 months to work and that depends and that depends on if we get hit by a hurricane or not. If we get hit by a hurricane that means we get knock out 2 or 3 weeks off our season," says On Shore Surf Shop owner George Howard.

The labor day weekend is the last big weekend of the summer for seasonal businesses like On Shore Surf Shop.

Howard said, "It's a little bit better than last year. The economy seems to be coming up some what."

East Coast Sports had a positive summer too.

"Things started off a little slow but our summer has well made up for it, hopefully if we get a beautiful October and on through this year and a good fishing season. We'll be up very good for this year," said Chris Medlin, East Coast Sports owner.

Medlin knows the easiest way to a paycheck, so work on labor day, was a no-brainer.

Medlin said,"Working on labor day, I don't know what it feels like to not work on labor day"

So as the sun sets on this summer, folks getting ready for the summer sun to rise again.

"There's a lot of traffic on the road today, but tomorrow you'll be able to get across the street no problem, they'll be gone," said Howard.
