WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Let’s get extraordinary with our Extraordinary People of the Week. It has been long said, in some way shape or form, that an idle mind is a devil’s playground. You’re about to meet Lyle and Deryll. They are a one-two punch in Wilmington.
But their reach? Let’s just say they have the RIGHT hook!

It’s a pint sized lesson that has quite the punch. “It helps a lot of people with anxiety issues, anger problems, and burns off energy,” President of Wilmington Coastal Boxing Deryll McCaskill told Daniel Seamans.
It also jump starts kids in a positive direction. “Discipline is one of the most important parts of growing up,” said Lyle Booker, Deryll’s partner and VP of the organization.

It gives local kids a swinging chance. “A lot of these kids are single family kids. Single parent kids and they have a lot of problems with men. When they have problems with men, they have problems with themselves and we have to get them through that,” Lyle said.

Lyle Booker and his colleague Deryll McCaskill help run the non-profit Wilmington Coastal Boxing.

“We decided to open our own boxing program to help with at risk youth and teens and obesity,” said Deryll.

Both are former amateur boxers and both admit it’s a tough fight but worth the challenge.

“Our kids,” Deryll said, “aren’t going to take boxing to the highest level you can go. We’re not really looking for that. We’re looking for kids to stay out of trouble, stay off the streets bad way, and be possible role models.”

Their non-profit Wilmington Coastal Boxing organization in Wilmington serves youth in Pender, Brunswick, and New Hanover counties.
It has the support of the City of Wilmington. And hits close to home. “We look for kids to become model citizens. Respect themselves. Respect their parents,” said Lyle.

There’s nothing fancy about this warehouse gym.
They know it.
“The gear wears out.”
But they know every time another kid walks in, they may walk out standing taller and confident.
“That’s what I try to push on the kids,” said Lyle.

And that kind of hook…it’s the RIGHT hook….and it’s Extraordinary.

And if you have any workout equipment that maybe you don’t use anymore…they could use it!
Don’t let it collect dust anymore….let it help give local kids an outlet!!
Those kind of donations help big time and of course, monetary donations do as well.
