WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A Winnabow man is in critical condition after police say he was hit by a car when crossing the street in downtown Wilmington late last night.

It happened just after 11 p.m. in the 300 block of S. 3rd Street. That's where officers say Roger Busteed, 47, was crossing the street between Ann and Nun streets when a car hit him. Police say Busteed was taken to the hospital for what officers say were serious injuries.

Police say the driver of the vehicle that hit him, Christy Gilbeau, of Castle Hayne, does not face any charges for the crash at this time. They say Busteed was wearing dark clothing and was crossing the road illegally when he was hit.

WPD is still investigating the crash. At last check, Busteed is still in critical condition.

Street lights

We need more street lights on the South side of town. The city paid to have the north side repaved and fitted with new street lights, why do they not have the same concern for the other side. There are hardly any lights on Orange Street, and the one ones that are there flicker on and off. Being that there are so many residents of downtown that walk home and live on the south side, wouldn't it be a smart idea to have the residential areas lit better for safety reason. I am not saying this would have prevented the accident, but I am sure it would prevent future incidents.
