WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Hundreds showed up to participate in a suicide awareness walk around Wrightsville Loop.
The “Out of Darkness” hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention raises awarness and money for research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives. Many of those who participated were family or friends of someone affected by depression or suicide.
Louise Lane participated in the walks in Raleigh and helped bring it to Wrightsville Beach four years ago. She said the walks have helped her heal from losing her father to suicide, and she thinks it’s important to raise awareness.
“There’s a big stigma behind it, and it’s just really important to get the message out there that there is help, there is hope, and to just help save lives,” said Lane.
Next Saturday, there will be another suicide awareness event at St. James Episcopal Church. For more information about that event click here.
