WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — When you think of canyons, you may think of the Grand Canyon, but a UNCW Marine Science professor received a prestigious award for his research on deepwater ocean canyons.

The award is the National Oceanographic Partnership’s Excellence in Partnering Award. This is the second major award given by the federal government for this project.

Dr. Steve Ross who heads the project said it was a five year project to study submarine canyons and the ecosystems in and around the canyons.

“That resulted in a recommendation for a very large protected area,” said Ross. “That area is now being considered by the department of commerce and it should be passed very soon.”

The project included professors, students, and groups from both North Carolina and Europe.
