WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A local Black Lives Matter group held a rally tonight in response to the Grand Jury decision in the Tamir Rice case.
The group gathered at the 1898 Memorial Park in Wilmington and said they wanted to show support and solidarity for Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, and others who have not yet received justice.
Kelly Rae Williams, a community member and member of Black Lives Matter, said the gathering was also to discuss the problem of local violence.
“Recently there was a killing on Sunday, and so I think we also want to get together and discuss what can we do here locally? Who can we talk to to end violence here in Wilmington?,” said Williams.
Community members held hands, took turns speaking, and lit candles.
Williams added that these local events are important because they bring together different groups of people to help make change happen.
