WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington charter school is raising concerns over how lockdowns are handled. The Cape Fear Center for Inquiry is not part of New Hanover County Schools and the school is technically it’s own school district.

“Our students are our priority,” said school director Lori Roy. “Last Tuesday, around 2:30, there was a gang related shooting that took place off Wellington Ave. and we are located off Wellington Ave. as well and we were not notified.”

Schools are notified of lockdown situations via a Twitter feed, but that feed is specifically for New Hanover County schools and CFCI doesn’t fall into that category.

One parent we spoke with who wanted to remain anonymous said that is just not acceptable.

“Truthfully, the sheriff’s department and the police department should be giving information to all schools regardless of funding source,” said the parent.

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said they are working on new technology that will improve communication between them and all schools.

“I can appreciate the fact that it’s a bigger system, so you’re talking about community systems trying to collaborate or operate or communicate information together but that’s not really my problem when it comes down to it at the end of the day it’s my kids,” said the parent.

Roy said the school has a great relationship with law enforcement and they are currently working together to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
