WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The 6th annual Feast Down East Conference took place at UNCW today.

The conference is focused around growing local food supplies in southeastern North Carolina. Feast Down East has a mission to help limited-resource farmers grow their business, while also getting those foods to local schools and low-income areas.

Those with an interest in food got to participate in workshops on everything from managing farms to where and how to buy local foods. Feast Down East President Leslie Hossfeld says the purpose of the conference is to expand the networks of small-scale farmers.

“How do you support small scale farmers and get them into our schools and restaurants and make sure that we’re eating locally, but we knew there was a multiplier and a ripple effect to that and it helps the local economy,” Hossfeld said.

Hossfeld said more than 300 people attended this year’s conference.
