WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A national political expert was in the Port City today.
NPR National Political Correspondent Don Gonyea was in town to speak at WHQR’s fundraising luncheon.
We stopped by to speak with him about his take on the current presidential race and reaction to North Carolina’s House Bill 2.
“I like to say that if the Republican side wasn’t so unpredictable and unusual and utterly unexpected the Democratic side might seem that, but compared to the Republican side it’s a far more tame but still very real battle,” Gonyea said.
In regards to the reactions to House Bill 2, Gonyea said, “This latest, you know, controversy and all of the debate over this law does kind of speak to how important North Carolina is on the national stage.”
Gonyea added that this is another example of how North Carolina is a battleground state, not just in presidential races, but in many other ways.
