WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Kevin Keatts spent most of Friday evening in Wilmington, but he’s about to put the Port City in his rear view mirror.

The Seahawks lost their first round NCAA Tournament game Thursday against Virginia.

One day after, Keatts met with NC State Athletics Director Debbie Yow. Yow offered the job to Keatts, and he accepted.

After reports began to surface that Keatts was leaving UNCW, a team meeting was called for 8 p.m. on Friday night.

“Pretty much he just came in and told us he was proud of us and uh, he really got an offer he couldn’t refuse, and as much as he doesn’t want to leave the program, he thought it was best for his family,” Senior Guard Denzel Ingram said after the meeting. “And most of us agree, pretty much everybody did. It’s tough. I hate to see it, especially for the guys that are staying here.”

“We are extremely grateful for the work Coach Keatts has done to rebuild our Men’s Basketball program over the past few years,” UNCW Chancellor Zito Sartarelli said in a statement. “Trask Coliseum has come alive again under his leadership of a talented team of young men. While we are very disappointed to lose Coach, we understand his decision to join a tradition-rich ACC program, and we wish him continued success. We are already working hard to secure a worthy successor, but Coach will always be a Seahawk to us.”

Takayo Siddle has been named Interim Head Coach for the UNCW Men’s Basketball team.

“Siddle, 30, joined the UNCW program after spending the four seasons as an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.,” UNCW Senior Associate Athletic Director Joe Browning said in a statement. “He arrived at GWU in 2010 following one season at Hargrave Military Academy.”

“A native of Eden, N.C., Siddle played four seasons for the Runnin’ Bulldogs from 2006-10, appearing in 114 games,” Browning said. “Siddle played in 21 games during his freshman year when GWU upset Minnesota and East Carolina on the road and took defending national champion North Carolina to the final buzzer.”
