NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — “Plant an Azalea Week” kicked off this morning at parks all over New Hanover County.

Members of the Cape Fear Garden Club and New Hanover County Parks and Gardens planted 100 new azaleas all over the county.

At Hugh MacRae Park, volunteers got their hands dirty, but that is not all. Some of the Azalea Belles were there.  Donor Relations Director Janine Powell with New Hanover County Parks and Gardens said it is a tradition they started four years ago.

“We try to have belles at the event, because nothing is more quintessential associated with the Azalea Festival, with the garden tour, with the Azalea Festival than with the belles,” Powell said.

Powell said they planted azaleas in 10 different county parks today. The azalea festival kicks off tomorrow.
