WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame made a big announcement today: the creation of the Coach Bill Dooley Education Foundation.

Dooley, who died last summer, was an award-winning ACC football coach. He was also one of the founding fathers of the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame.

He had a major impact on sports in the Wilmington area.

The foundation is meant to help promote the scholarship in his name for student athletes who excel both on and off the field.

“He gave a lot of his life to working with young men,” Dooley’s widow Marie said. “He mentored thousands of young men over the years and he demanded of them the same work ethic that he required of them on the field, to also carry it over to the classroom.”

The scholarship program was established in 2007 and has awarded scholarships to several athletes over the years.
