WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW has a new Women’s Basketball Head Coach.

Karen Barefoot was officially introduced to the community on Wednesday afternoon.

The Virginia native last coached at Old Dominion where she lead the Monarchs to a 17-14 record last season.

Coach Barefoot said she looks forward to growing the Seahawks into a championship team.

She said fans can expect great things from the team in the future, including a “teal collar work ethic.”

“When you put that teal on it’s all work,” Barefoot said. “And we’re gonna have fun, but we’re going to earn fun. We’re going to earn fun and we’re going to pack this place in time.”

“Oh I’m definitely excited,” UNCW Women’s Basketball player Lacey Suggs said. “She seems very energetic which is what I like and a hard worker, so I’m excited.”

Barefoot has already begun assembling her coaching staff.

The university announced former University of Delaware Head Coach Tina Martin will join Barefoot as an Assistant Coach.
