Gingrich brings presidential campaign to Wilmington Wednesday

The Republican race for the White House comes to North Carolina tomorrow, as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich holds a rally at UNCW, according to his deputy press secretary. The event is scheduled for 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Wilmington City Council votes to implement recycling plan and not extend parking meter fees

video Wilmington City Council voted Tuesday night to spend $1.1 million for new large recycling carts. Mayor Bill Saffo says this will save the city money in the long run, as well as offer residents some immediate savings.

Monkey Junction to receive city services

Tuesday night following a closed session, the Wilmington City Council agreed to take immediate steps to provide city services to residents in the Monkey Junction area. The Council made the determination in the wake of a court ruling last week that the new annexation statutes approved by the General Assembly in 2011 are unconstitutional.

Ashley faced Laney on day two of the annual Ashley High School Spring Break Baseball Tournament. Brunswick County Board of Education votes to return schools to traditional start schedule

Brunswick County Schools are going back to the future for next year's school schedule. During Tuesday night's Board of Education meeting, members voted 3-2 to return all schools to a traditional start schedule during the 2012-13 school year. It is anticipated the start time for all schools will return to 8 a.m.

Poll: Disappointing marks for N.C. public schools

North Carolinians are unhappy with their public schools. According to a monthly poll by the Civitas Institute, more than half (52 percent) of respondents rated North Carolina’s public school system as “Only fair” (37 percent) or “Poor” (15percent).

VOTE 2012: Washington Post blogger thinks Walter Jones is ripe for losing

Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC): If there’s one guy who’s ripe for a conservative primary challenge, it’s Jones. Jones frequently votes against his party on the major issues of the day, the most recent being Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) budget. In fact, it’s a wonder he’s escaped serious opposition in recent years. That could change this year, with former New Bern Police Chief Frank Palombo running against him and the Campaign for Primary Accountability targeting him. We’ll see if Jones is actually threatened, but he’s a ripe target.
