videoOn Thursday night we featured first round action from the CAA Women's Basketball Tournament in Maryland. UNCW defeated Georgia State to advance to the quarterfinals. On Thursday we also checked in with the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament. Plus, we caught up with the New Hanover boys basketball team for their final practice at Brogden Hall before Saturday's 4-A state title game.

Middle school debates bring out the big guns on the Battleship

Trask and Holly Shelter Middle Schools have been squaring off in competition this year, checking their notes and making their best presentation. Organizers decided to bring out the big guns and hold the contests at various community locations. Thursday night started on deck at the Battleship until a little relocation was needed.

Woman collects more than 40,000 butts off beach; says ban is necessary

videoThe warmer weather means it's finally beach season, and that means thousands of people will make their way to Wrightsville Beach. As the town prepares for the 2012 tourist season, the Board of Aldermen are also considering a new smoking ban. Locals say they plan to speak out about this ban tonight at a public hearing.

videoGang rape, harassment and sexual assault. Those are among the allegations from eight women in a lawsuit filed this week against the Department of Defense. The suit filed Tuesday claims military officials, including the current and former secretaries of Defense, ignored the rampant problem of sexual assaults.

As governor, legislature fight for ferry fares, business owners worry

videoIt hasn't happened yet, but riding a ferry in North Carolina could soon cost more. The legislature required the Department of Transportation to raise more revenue from ferry riders, but a recent executive order by the governor has temporarily stopped that plan. People in southport are still worried about the possibility of a hike.

Brunswick Co. Sheriff hosting charity ball to benefit the SECU Hospice House

Proceeds of this event will benefit the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and LifeCareCenter’s SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. This 20,000 square foot inpatient facility will add to Brunswick County’s continuum of health care options.
