Today in his newsletter email, New Hanover County Commissioner Jason Barfield outlined some of the specific concerns he has about the way the School Board is spending money. His major issues are with two empty buildings and a third that needs a roof. However, Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley contends the county already has oversight of capital expenditures and building projects.

WPD: No leads on puppy killer despite reward

WPD investigators have been unsuccessful in locating the person(s) who killed two puppies on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. In response to media coverage, several animal welfare organizations have pledged money for a reward for anyone supplying information that leads to an arrest. Pledges currently total more than $2,000.

WPD: Man robbed at knifepoint downtown

The male victim, age 25, reported that he was in a bar drinking with a man he did not know by name. According to the victim, the two agreed to go somewhere else to get a drink. The victim said he stopped to sit on one of the benches on Water Street when a third person (male voice) came up behind him and held a knife to his neck.

Mount Olive man guilty of dog-fighting charges
