A long walk to school

READ MORE:
They're Tar Heels alright. On Saturday, Chapel Hill alums Bryan Jones and Nick Becketti set off on an epic hike from Wrightsville Beach all the way to their alma mater-- a nearly one hundred seventy mile trip. "A, we're just crazy," said Jones, a Charlotte based entreprenuer who graduated UNC Chapel Hill in '06. "And B, when we thought about it we said hey we should start a tradition at Carolina and this is pretty much the oldest one ya got." Jones and Becketti are following in the footsteps of Hinton James, UNC's first student who made the trek in 1795. Legend has it that James walked in the dead of winter. This time around, Jones and Becketti will have to beat the heat. "I'm already hot, I'm already tired, I'm already sweating pretty good," said Becketti after walking almost two miles. "But we're excited!" They plan to cover about twenty miles a day. That's nine hours of walking per day for two weeks straight. Don't forget their thirty five pound backpacks, equipped with food, water and sleeping accomodations. They plan to pitch tents on the side of the road. Of course, they will have some comforts of the modern world, like cell phones and laptop computers to keep up with work. Jones says he hopes the journey will become tradition for all Tar Heels. "It doesn't matter if you're a student, alumni, you've never been there...the only people we won't take are Duke fans," he said. "I know that it's a challenge," said Becketti. "But i know that we're up for the challenge." Whitney Reeds, a third hiker, will join Jones and Becketti soon. They hope to reach their final destination--the old well on the Chapel Hill campus--by August 15th. They'll be documenting their travels online at www.hjwalk.com.
