Non-profit helps ease the pain of soaring gas and food prices

READ MORE: Non-profit helps ease the pain of soaring gas and food prices

As the price of gas approaches $4 a gallon and food prices continue to increase, people are looking for ways to save a buck and one non-profit organization is trying to help. Once a month dozens of people wait outside of Life Community Church in Wilmington to pick up affordable food.

“You can get two t-bone steaks and a lot of other meats for $20," Delores Lynch said. "And you can only get two t-bones at the grocery store for $20."

The non-profit group Angel Food Ministries began the outreach program to help people save money when buying food, especially when grocery bills continue to rise.

“This is not a handout, this is a hand up," said Daren Adams, one of the people heading up the program. "The people pay for it. We buy the food from the same vendors the grocery stores buy from."

An entire box of food is worth more than $65 but costs only $30, and it contains everything from rib-eye steaks to mixed vegetables and a dozen eggs.

“Volunteers are here to help distribute the food, so it allows the consumer to get twice or three times the amount of what they pay for in the box," Adams said.

Angel Food Ministries donates $1 per box to the church helping distribute the food. This money goes toward community outreach programs. There are no qualifications to buy the food at cost.

"You don't have to be in need to participate," Adam said. "We're trying to help people with the rising cost in food and the rising cost in fuel. This is a way for people to stretch their dollar."
